Classroom management Strategies Assessment

Overview:

One of the major challenges that has been identified as the main contributor to new teacher success is classroom management. This is especially true among teachers entering the field without prior training. This assessment is designed as part of a eLearning course that explains basic classroom management strategies that can be implemented in a short amount of time and gain results.

Audience: This activity was designed specifically for teachers in years 0-2 with no teaching courses or experience.

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Graphic design

Tools Used: Adobe Captivate 7, Adobe Photoshop, Powerpoint, Google slides

Problem and Solution

Working in the classroom for the past ten years, I have had the opportunity to take stock of the new teachers and the major hurdle to their classroom success. As I noted a pattern, I then went to the literature to check for studies to see if this was an issue across the board. I found study after study bearing this out. From here, I noted that there were four main strategies that were suggested over and over in each study and that begin the inspiration for the course.

Process

In the beginning, I tried to determine the best path to help teacher with this challenge. I researched to identify the key strategies that could be used. This lead to the understanding that this would work best in a sequence of scenarios. This would allow the teacher to think through and find the "best" strategy.

From there, I outlined common teacher responses to student behavior. and used this to structure the assessment.

With these in place, I built the wireframe in Microsoft PowerPoint. This allowed me to design the layout in a familiar program before moving over to add interactions in Captivate.

Once the interactions were set, I used my knowledge of the program to use the variable and JavaScript built into the program to ensure a seamless run from start to finish.
